〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Alphonse Elric
CHARACTER AGE: 15
SERIES: Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 series
CHRONOLOGY: Pulling him from Conqueror of Shamballa from the under city right before he and Wrath open the gate.
CLASS: Hm, sidekick to his brother? Hero in his own right though
HOUSING: Prefer to have him housed near or with his brother.
BACKGROUND:
Alphonse Elric’s the youngest son born to Trisha Elric and Von Hohenhiem. He has an older brother, Edward.
He was young when his father left them, which he and his brother see as the downfall of their mother’s health. Their father had left all of his research material behind, which the boys used to learn Alchemy, edward had a better grasp of it even at a young age than his brother, but Alphonse isn’t a novice being able to transmute small figures, and assisting his brother in making a doll for Winry when they were children (the act of it actually scaring her).
When their mother died, the two swore they’d bring her back. They found a teacher (Izumi Curtis) who taught them Alchemy, and they returned home to Resembool, attempting to bring their mother back from the dead. This attempt didn’t have the desired effect, instead of their mother they created a Homunculi, which Al watched through the eyes of as his brother tied his soul to a suit of armor that stood in the corner of the room. While Alphonse lost his body, Ed lost his arm and leg.
For the next four years the two traveled the country, Edward as a State Alchemist, in order to figure out how to return their bodies to normal. They’re quest is assisted by Roy Mustang and his men (breda, Havok, Hawkeye to name a few), their childhood friend Winry, and other friends they meet on the way. The boys not knowing that they’re pawns in a plot by homunculi to become human (They’re chosen to help make a Philosopher’s stone which the boys refuse to do so, since making one will kill hundreds of lives).
When they’re finally forced to create a stone Al’s used to carry it, which amplifies his powers, though it’s unstable. Kimblee tries to use him as a walking bomb, which is defused by Scar, who’s arm finishes creating the philosopher’s stone, binding Al’s soul to it. This also allows him to do alchemy without an array at all.
He and Ed travel to the final fight, hoping to end everything, in the last moments of the fight, Edward transmutes himself so that Al’s body returns, and he’s sent to Germany, years before the Nazi party take over.
A few years later, Alphonse is healthy again, and following in his brother’s footsteps, trying to find a way to get his brother back. This leads him back to Lior, where he meets with Rose again, and stops strange creatures from destroying the town. He slips part of his soul into one of the armored suits as it’s pulled back to it’s world.
The soul fragment finds Edward, rescuing him from a firing squad. It also allows him to figure out how to bring his brother back.
Back home he’s shown asleep at Winry Rockbell’s, When he wakes, he and Wrath, the Homunculi that Izumi Curtis created, head to the city that exists under Central. While there the two are attacked by Gluttony, Wrath coming up with the idea on the fly for Al to transmutate the two in order to open the gate. (This is the point I’m pulling him from, right before he transmutes the pair and brings his brother back.)
PERSONALITY:
Meet the kinder gentler Elric brother. He’s used to being confused for his brother, people tend to think he’s Full Metal due to him being in a suit of metal armor. Al is soft spoken to correct them. His height in the armor’s a running gag in the series as well, though not as screamingly obvious as Ed’s short height. Al makes mention a few times that it’s not his fault he’s tall (once is to stop Ed and Winry from fighting in front of him about Ed not drinking his milk).
Alphonse is almost the exact opposite of his older brother, where Edward seems quick to judge and act, Alphonse tends to hold back and think things over, trying to find a nonviolent way to deal with a situation. While both brothers try their best to avoid killing anyone, Al is least likely to send someone to the hospital by going into a blind rage of emotions. He even warns a few terrorists on a train that shooting him would be a bad idea because the bullets would ricochet and might hurt them.
This isn’t to say he doesn’t have his moments, he just takes longer to cook before blowing his top, letting things bottle up more because his brother usually loses his cool before Al can. When Al does blow his top it’s usually in epic proportions, leaving a greater impact, case in point would be when Edward refrains from asking Alphonse if he blames him (Edward) for being stuck as he is. This happened when they were in the hospital, Edward being damaged from a fight with Scar. When Al confronts him about it and Ed says nothing Al runs off. That had been the last straw after the idea that he might not be real was implanted in him by Barry the Chopper who said it wouldn’t be hard to build in fake memories when he was ‘made’.
In this way he also seems a little more naive and innocent than Ed. The fact he can have the words of another soul bound armor try to convince him he’s not real despite his feelings for and the feelings his brother’s shown about him. Al also proves this with his outburst on a rainy day when he finds a kitten. He knows that there really is no way that he and Edward can keep it, but he insists that Ed’s cruel and uncaring in his outburst when the older brother tells him to return the cat where he found it. This causes Ed to cave in for a bit, telling Al they’ll see if they can get Mustang or one of his men to care for the kitten.
He’s also empathetic of others, like when he finds out what really happened in Ishval; while his brother still wanted to kill Scar because of what he had done to other State Alchemists and to Nina, Alphonse saw the reason why Scar acted the way he did. After all his people were almost completely wiped out, while he didn’t agree with Scar’s actions he did respect him when he witnessed the killer risk his life to save a kid who was taken by mercenaries acting as Military. During the events that followed Al, learned that there was more to Scar than everyone else saw and actually learned to respect him, knowing that his people needed him. This allowed him to help convince Ed to not tell the military where he was later so that Scar could escape with the Ishvalan children.
He also shows his empathetic side when he holds down his helmet when Marta is inside him and Greed asks him to get her out of the sewers when they’re surrounded by the military. He refuses to let her out because there’s already been so much bloodshed, he doesn’t want her to be added to the body count. When she’s killed inside him he breaks down a little because he had been unable to save her.
Al shows his protective nature towards women a few other times, preferring to put himself between the threat and whomever he’s protecting, be it Edward, Winry, Rose, Riza, or others. He’s slightly more protective over women in his life, this might be partly because of feeling guilty he and Ed couldn’t protect their mother, and that they failed to bring her back to life.
When Al blows up emotionally he leaves his brother’s side, usually finding a riverbank to sit near and sulk until he can recompose himself. This is something he’s done whenever he and Ed fight since they were kids. Trisha sends Ed to go find him knowing that it’ll get the brothers to talk to each other.
His canon point has him missing 4 years of his life (The four years he was in armor), but he’s still trying to help people, which reminds him he’s a little more breakable at times than he was with the armor.
POWER:
Canon:
Alchemy - He’s able to trans-mutate matter into weapons. He can also move stone to make barriers or steps. He needs an array, which he keeps as a pair of gloves he wears.
Soul splitting - He’s able to split his soul and put it into inanimate objects (armored forms) to use them to fight for him. (Down side, makes him really tired.)
Other:
Kitten magnet - If there is a kitten within fifty yards of him on a rainy day, he will be able to find it. Does not work on full grown cats, only kittens. This is a passive skill, instinctively if a cat’s nearby he’ll go to it (doesn’t matter if he’s on an errand or not)

[the camera’s bouncing around a little, the user’s moving, but it does try to stay focused on the subject they’re filming. It’s a kitten, playing on a neatly made bed.]
Brother’s going to scold me for this, but it was raining I couldn’t leave her out there.
[The kitten mews pouncing the string held in the hand to the right of the screen] So, I’m hoping that someone recognizes her I’d like to return her to her home before brother finds out.
Please contact me if you do, I’m Alphonse Elric. [He yelps as the kitten catches his hand and drops the phone to scoop up the happily dry and playful kitten.] Okay okay, we’ll go get you some milk. Probably a good thing Edward doesn’t like drinking it. [He turns off the camera]
